Oman is strategically diversifying its economy by reducing reliance on oil and opening avenues to encourage economic globalization

Like other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, more than 75% of the workforce are expatriates and contribute to the international expertise of Oman's development.

Global businesses have an opportunity to leverage Oman's growing private sector. This guide serves as your comprehensive roadmap to navigating the process for an Oman work visa and permit.

We will discuss the different visa options available, review specific requirements, and uncover best practices for applying for an Oman work visa and permit.

Alternatively, professional service providers like Skuad simplify the entire process of securing work visas and permits when you partner with Skuad for EOR.

Most global companies partner with Skuad’s employer-of-record services to get assistance with the Oman work visa and permit process.

Types of Oman Work Visa and Permits

Here’s a breakdown of common work visas and permit options in Oman:

Oman work visa types

Here's a table summarizing different types of work visa in Oman:

Oman Work Visa Duration Sponsorship Purpose
Work Visa 2 years (renewable) Employer Standard work visa for full-time employment
Temporary Work Visa 4 months, 6 months, or 9 months. Employer Short-term work visa for specific projects
Employment Contracting Visa 2 months Variable (company or licensed sponsor) Visa for freelance or contract work in specialized professions

There are three main types of Oman work visas:

  • Resident Work Visa
    • This is the standard multiple-entry work visa in Oman.
    • It's valid for two years and allows foreign employees to live and work in Oman.
    • As an employer, you must sponsor and take responsibility for residency during your employment.
  • Temporary Work Visa (Sponsored Short Work Visa):
    • This visa is ideal for short-term projects or assignments.
    • It allows multiple entries into the country, and its validity ranges from 4 months to 6 months or 9 months.
    • Similar to the resident visa, you must sponsor and manage the application.
  • Employment Contracting Visa:
    • This visa category isn't as common, but it exists. It's intended for highly specialized professions or setting up a short-term consultancy contract.
    • It is a single-entry visa option with a validity of typically two months and a renewable one-month period.
    • This visa caters to freelancers or independent contractors brought in for specific projects. There isn't a traditional employer-employee relationship.
    • Sponsorship can vary. Sometimes, an Omani company might sponsor the employee, or companies might need to secure a sponsor licensed to bring in freelance workers.

Oman work permit types

As an employer, you must arrange labor permits, issued by the Ministry of Manpower for foreign employees. However, there isn't a big difference between a work permit and a visa in Oman. Here's why:

  • Oman work visa: This is a sponsored process in which you can initiate the application for employees to legally reside and work in Oman.
  • Oman labor permit: This is a process by which the government verifies that there’s a legitimate job opening and that you are eligible to hire foreign workers for the advertised job role in Oman.

Otherwise, applicants can't get a work visa without a work permit, and the permit is pointless without the visa.
